SHAMAMA BEAR'S REVIEWS

By A Maine River: A Year Of Looking Closely
by
Thomas Mark Szelog and Leeann Szelog

Nature provides a world of treasures each season if we only take the time to look closely. This book of remarkable and beautiful photographs and observations grew out of a challenge the Maine nature photographer set himself: find and photograph -- within the confines of his 70-acre, central Maine property -- at least one interesting, surprising, beautiful, or memorable image every week for an entire year.

The ambitious project was not without its challenges.  The photographer/author endured all sorts of weather conditions and the work required patience and skill to capture the images.  Sometimes he had the challenge of waning daylight during his vigils but each time he met the challenges to get the picture.

Bringing his experience as an outdoor photographer for clients ranging from National Geographic, to Random House, to Patagonia Clothing to this project, Szelog focused his patient, practiced eyes as well as his camera on his own land.

During his year he found that "I was alone in the woods, but I was not lonely...In the forest, I found peace."  In addition, he created a visual diary and almanac of the life around his home.  From the humble squirrel to the great blue heron, to the patterns of moss and lichen, he shows us how much life whirls around us and how often we don't take the time to notice.

This is a lovely book that captures the splendor of Nature and reminds us of the preciousness that is present in all parts of our Life.
