Spirit Living Air Travel Tips

1. ALWAYS look at the airline luggage routing tags that the ticket agent is putting on your checked baggage and look at your claim stubs too. Don’t just assume they are putting the right tag on the right bag.

2. By all means, put something on the outside that helps you to identify your bag in the carousel AND also put your contact information INSIDE the bag. This way if the outer tag gets lost, airline folks can identify that you are the bag's owner!

3. Travel with Sharpie markers and zip-closure plastic bags. They are great for marking and identifying things quickly.

4. ALWAYS carry the phone number of your airline with you. This makes checking details and times much easier and doing the next tip!

5. If your flight is cancelled, don’t wait in the long line in front of the ticket agent to get on another plane. Just step aside and call your airline directly from your cell phone. It’s just like cutting in line but nobody will get mad at you.

6. Bring pre-printed return address labels with you. They’re great for quickly filling out airline luggage tags and other forms.

7. Don’t travel with gel pens. You could wake up in a pool of ink as the air pressure changes can cause the ink to burst out!

8. Get a travel pillow that supports your neck. Neck pillows  are available in several varieties to support your neck while you’re trying to sleep on the plane. If you're looking to reduce weight and bulk, try an inflatable one!

Other People/Other Cultures

Here in Maine, Summer is a time of wonderful festivals!  Ethnic and cultural celebrations are a great way to introduce you and your family to new ideas and new experiences.

I was fortunate to have been raised amidst many kinds of people from many different cultures. What I learned from this exposure to so many diverse people,  was that while our differences make the human race an interesting lot, the similarities between us always shine through.

People all want to be happy, safe, well fed, have a good home and have healthy futures.  How we each go about that is part of what makes our species so splendid!

Each of the world's cultures has cared for and preserved something wonderful to share with each other.

It may be a specific dance, musical tradition, or song style.  For another group it may be a  craft, maintaining a living language, religious celebration or preparation of an unusual food.  Whatever the difference may be, it is a part of a living tradition that is a vibrant part of the global family's palette of richness.

Since we are becoming a global culture, it is even more important to preserve individual traditions and also to share our special talents with each other.  It's equally important to reach out and get acquainted with the unique gifts that are available from the world's other cultures.

Sometimes, this means taking a risk and trying something new!  It may be a taste of an unusual food, participating in a new dance, listening to a new kind of music or trying out a new perspective on the world. On the other hand, it may mean siting down and asking someone from another culture or religion about themselves and their life.

Stretching yourself into another person's world and above all keeping an open heart, can bring some truly fabulous experiences to you and your family. Take your family into a new territory of experience--reach out to the many cultures that surround you!

Let us know how you spend the last days of Summer! editors@spiritliving.org.
